Shore Leave
  by Brooks Peters

In case any of you were wondering why I haven’t added a new post recently, it’s because I’m on a spiritual hiatus of sorts in the wilds of Maine. I’ve rented a small cottage in Bass Harbor for the month of September while taking some time off to finish work on the writing project I started back in Natchez last March. I can’t think of a better backdrop to inspire creativity, especially since I had hit a dry spell over the last few months.

Bass Harbor is a charming fisherman’s village on the southwestern coast of Mount Desert island. Bar Harbor is to the East; Seal Harbor just a few miles away. The famous Bass Harbor Head Light, or lighthouse, is within walking distance from my residence. For me, this is a nostalgic return to an island I visited in the early 90s while writing a home design piece on Northeast Harbor for House & Garden magazine.

I’ve only just arrived here so I have little to say (for a change!). But I’ll let these pictures give you an idea of how beautiful it is. One can hardly go a hundred feet without seeing some spectacular vista that takes one’s breath away. I promise to get back into the swing of things vis-a-vis my blog when I return from my month-long sabbatical.
